31 October (Northern Hemisphere).
1 May (Southern Hemisphere) Also called of Halloween,
Day of the Souls, Day of the Dead, Samhain means “without Sun" - it is
the winter. In this time the veil between the
invisible world and the world in that we lived is more tenuous, facilitating
the contact with the gods, the dead
and the spirits of the Nature. It is the period to recall of the
died relatives putting their photos in the altar. Some families celebrate the date
with a dinner, leaving place in the table for their ancestral that left first
for the Earth of the Summer, serving him foods so that they can assimilate
its astral part. The ancient did faces of hollow
pumpkins and they put a candle inside to move away the bad spirits. The Sun is very low in the
horizon, the shadows and the cold appear; the leaves begin to fall of the
trees. It is the return of the God to the
Kingdom of the Dead. Samhain was the beginning of the
New Year of the pagans, when the God started to be born again in the skies
illuminating the Earth, giving more life to the Earth for new harvests. And the wiccan should meditate
their actions of the year that passed and to plan a better life for the year
than is arriving. Y U L E -
Solstice of Winter
± 20 December, HN - ± 20 June, HS It is the longest night and the
shortest day of the year. It marks the rebirth of the God,
the Sacred Child, the Boy Sun. Christ, Mithras and other divine
babies have his birth been celebrated in this time. In the period of Yule the people
brought a pine tree, one of the few trees that resists to the snow, inside of
house and decorated it with candles and meals, presents for the gods. The Christmas derive of this pagan
party. I M B O L C
2 February, HN - 1 August, HS Also called of Candlemas,
Day of Brigit or it Brida. The Catholic Church commemorates
on this occasion Saint Brigida that according to the Christian was the
midwife of the Virgin Marie. Imbolc is an old word that means
"in the milk", period in that the cows and the goats began to
produce milk, sign that the spring was arriving again. Candlemas means mass of candles,
due the processions with great number
of candles and torches – a mass of people and candles. The goddess Brigit was the goddess
of the fire, of the Nature, of the poetry, of the knowledge. O S T A R A
- Equinox of the Spring
± 20 March, HN - ± 20 September, HS Festival
of the return of the spring, the begin of the plantations, the time of the
flowers. The
god Sun returned fertilizing the goddess Earth, the flowers appear and the
animals are impelled to reproduce. In
this time the days and the nights have the same time of duration, it is the
equinox of the spring: the balance and the harmony of the cycle light and darkness. The
goddess of this Sabbath is Eostre (any similarity with Easter is not mere
coincidence).. Eostre
is the goddess Anglo-Saxon of the spring, of the rebirth and of the
resurrection, of the fertility and of the grains. The
symbolism of the rabbit of Easter, comes from this pagan festival, because
the rabbit is one of the more fertile animals and it gestation lasts the
equivalent time to a lunation, 28 days. The
Nature returns to the life in Ostara, the days are longer than the nights,
and the Earth covers herself of green and animal life. In
the Antiquity the pagans (people of the field) painted the eggs and gave for their relatives and neighboring,
this practices continues until today in Ukraine. The
habit continued and today the eggs are of chocolates decorated with colored
packing. The
egg symbolized fertility of the Earth Mother, of the Goddess and Creation of
the Creator’s God. Taking
advantage of this pagan party, the Christians fastened his Easter, Christ's
resurrection, in the Sunday following to the Full Moon, after the equinox of the spring – a way
well pagan of fastening a date. B E L T A N E 1 May, HN - 31 October, HS Also
called Eve of May, Night of Walpurgis (in Germany). Beltane
means “fire of Bel”. Bel was the Celtic god of the life and of the death. Being
Bel the god of the fire, in this Sabbath the people lit a bonfire and after
they jumped it to liberate itself of the bad influences, diseases and to
increase the couple's fertility. The
habit of jumping the bonfire continued until today, but it is dangerous for
our more refined civilization. In
the covens the witches jump candles or even the fire of the incense, with the
danger of burning their dresses or long mantles. Besides
the bonfires, they raised the “mast of May", May Pole, that represented the masculine energy and the
disk put in the top the feminine energy. In
the disk they tied colored ribbons symbolizing the colors of the rainbow of
the Sun. A
young women was elect the Queen of May, representing the Earth Goddess. Around
the mast of May the youths danced interlacing the colored ribbons. In
Sweden this old habit is still very alive. It
was a festival of fire and fertility.

Solstice of Summer ± 20 June, HN - ± 20 December, HS The
solstice of Summer is when the Sun God reaches the maximum of its
]irradiation, it is the longest day of the year, and the shortest night – it
is the middle of the summer (Mid Summer).
The
fairies and the other spirits of the Nature are more easily seen in this
time. L A M 1 August, HN - 2 February, HS This
festival is also known by Lughnasadh or Party of the Bread. The
word lammas means “mass of Lugh”, because with the grains of the first crop
did a bread (mass) that was distributed to the presents." The
bread was the humanity's main food during centuries; no the refined bread in
the modern mills of iron, but the black bread, integral, healthy. If
they had eaten our bread white, useless, maybe the humanity had not survived
satisfactorily. The
corn was only used recently, after the discovery of America. It
is the time of the first crop after the spring: seeds, cereals, fruits and
mainly the wheat for the bread. The
celebration didn't have day certain, it depended on each crop, in each
village. The
Christianity adopted this pagan party carrying the breads for the interior of
the Church where they were blessed and distributed to the followers. It
is the time to demonstrate gratitude to the Nature and to the Sun god Sun for the abundant harvest.
M A B O N ± 20 September, HN - ± 20 Março, HS It
is the celebration of the second crop. The
god of this Sabbath is Mabon After
this equinox (the day and the night have the same duration), the nights begin
to be longer and the winter approaches. The
Nature and the life begin to weaken, getting ready to rest and to fall asleep
for a brief period. And
thus the Wheel of the Year, in its eternal rotation, goes alternating the phases of the life here in
the Earth. =
